The Vermont National Guard is going solar.

U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders says a $5 million grant he helped procure could result in one of the region’s biggest solar energy projects.

It’s planned for the Guard’s base at Burlington International Airport, where officials are looking to install photovoltaic cells to generate power for the facility.

Sanders said Monday the project – which is still being designed – will help reduce the Guard’s carbon footprint and help Vermont become a leader in sustainable energy production.

Sanders, I-Vt., chairs the new Senate Subcommittee on Green Jobs and New Economy. The money is contained in a 2009 Department of Defense appropriations bill.
