BURLINGTON – A University of Vermont fraternity whose members are accused of circulating a survey that asked who they would like to rape has been closed indefinitely.

The national Sigma Phi Epsilon made the announcement on Friday.

The national organization has said the questionnaire was not sanctioned by the fraternity.

A student reported the questionnaire to university officials over the weekend, which led the school and the Richmond, Va.-based national organization to suspend the chapter temporarily.

The school is investigating how widely the survey was circulated, and campus police department are trying to determine if any crimes have been committed.

John Bramley, the interim president at UVM, said in a press release:

"UVM’s investigation of these events will continue. We will gather all relevant information and examine it to determine whether policies or laws have been violated, and by whom. This investigation will likely take several weeks to conclude, and any further action would occur within the parameters and requirements of applicable procedures, policies or laws. We will keep the community appropriately informed without compromising the investigation or violating laws and policies around student privacy. All should expect that any such incidents in the future will receive the same intense scrutiny and serious consequences."
