More than 100 naturalists and volunteers will be combing fields and streets tomorrow in Montpelier in an event that’s part celebration, part science.

The 24-hour "bio blitz" is aimed at cataloguing the living things in Vermont’s capital.

Working from headquarters at the North Branch Nature Center, biologists will lead walks and give talks. Among them: a a beetle expert from the Smithsonian, a mushroom expert from Massachusetts and a Kansas professor who studies microscopic creatures called tardigrades.

The event’s scavengers will hit fields, a wetland and a bend in the North Branch of the Winooski River that are near the center. They also plan to look on city streets, National Life’s hilltop property and maybe some backyards.
