The Nature Conservancy has acquired 312 acres of forest land that includes the summit of Mount Equinox from the Southern Vermont Arts Center.
Officials say the parcel is special because the land could be considered an ideal example of the northern hardwood forest.
Nature Conservancy Director Bob Klein says the parcel includes up to 50 different species of plants. The land includes steep forested slopes and rocky cliffs.
More than 5,000 acres of land are already protected on Mount Equinox by the Conservancy and a number of other organizations.
Arts Center officials say the deal was worth $850,000.
Conservancy officials said the land would remain open to the public.
