New Hampshire remains bargain on state cigarette tax

It looks like New Hampshire is going to remain the region’s bargain on cigarettes for a while — if you can afford the gas to get there.

Vermont’s cigarette tax goes up by 20 cents a pack tomorrow to $1.99 — a penny below Maine’s. New Hampshire’s is at $1.08 now and will rise to $1.33 if a $48 million revenue target isn’t hit between now and October.

But while some Vermonters might be tempted to head east for smokes, some New Yorkers might as well.

The Empire State just raised its cigarette tax to $2.75, making Vermont’s $1.99 a bargain for those living near the border.
