New Hampshire voters face tight early voting restrictions

About a third of the electorate is expected to vote early this year thanks to expanded early voting provisions and fewer restrictions on absentee voting, but not in New Hampshire.

More than 30 states allow any registered voter to cast an early ballot, some in person and others by mail. Six weeks out from Election Day, some voters in Kentucky, South Carolina and Virginia already are done.

But that isn’t the case in New Hampshire, where voters must meet one of four conditions in order to request an absentee ballot, and won’t be able to do so until the first week of October.

In the last presidential election, 9 percent of the ballots cast in New Hampshire were from absentee voters. In the presidential primary in January, about 5 percent of the ballots cast were from absentee voters.
