(Host) Commuters have an easier trip to work and home again now that the new Lake Champlain Bridge has opened.

The half-mile-long bridge connects Crown Point and Addison.

People who live on one side of Lake Champlain and work on the other have had to find new ways to commute over the two years since the previous bridge at the site was demolished.

The underwater supporting piers on the span built in 1929 had badly deteriorated.

A temporary ferry has run near the bridge site during construction. But with the opening of the new bridge, that ferry has also closed down.

Governor Peter Shumlin and New York Lieutenant Governor Robert Duffy cut a ceremonial ribbon on the New York side of the span to open it.

Dozens of cars lined up in Crown Point before the ceremony waiting to be among the first drivers to cross the bridge.

One of the people who was on hand for the ribbon cutting today was Sue Hoxie of the Addison County Chamber of Commerce.

We reached her by phone afterward and asked her to give a sense of the festivities.
