New land eligible for current-use taxation

A new state law is helping more landowners enroll parts of their properties in the state’s current-use program, lowering their property taxes and preserving sensitive areas from development.

Historically, land had to be subject to periodic timber harvesting or used for farming for its owners to participate in the current-use program.

But this year, the Legislature passed a law allowing landowners to apply to have environmentally sensitive parts of their property enrolled in the program as well.

The Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation is managing the program, which backers say will help protect wetlands and other environmentally sensitive areas.
