(Host) The town of Newfane has voted to keep its current zoning bylaws, while acknowledging that some changes to the laws will need to be made.

The town voted by Australian ballot this week on a ballot to dissolve the town’s zoning restrictions.

The vote was 329 to 103 against repealing the bylaws, which were first established in 1975.

The election followed two public hearings in which some residents complained that the zoning laws were too restrictive, and presented too many obstacles.

Gary Katz is chairman of the Newfane select board.

Katz says he’d like the town to address any remaining concerns as quickly as possible.

(Katz) "I’ll ask the select board to encourage the planning commission to go ahead and get started on the bylaw revision process to try and take into account some of the comments and concerns  that were raised during the course of the hearings leading up to the election."

(Host) The select board next meets in early January.
