Newport’s City Council has approved a mobile methadone clinic. Under the terms approved Monday night, the clinic will be parked in the city recycling lot beginning in April. The mobile clinic will be at the lot every morning from six to eight o’clock.

The Northeast Kingdom is the first region of the state to host mobile methadone clinics to help people addicted to heroin. Another mobile clinic is planned for St. Johnsbury, but no site has been determined yet. As many as 100 people could be treated at each of the clinics. The Newport clinic will serve residents of Essex and Orleans counties. St. Johnsbury will serve Caledonia County residents.
