Newport Explores Historic Preservation

The city of Newport wants to create a historic preservation commission, in hopes of identifying features in the city that could be used to obtain grant money for promotions.

Among the possibilities: An "app" for wireless devices that could give visitors a guided walking tour of Newport’s history and sites.

Diane McInerney represents the Vermont Division of Historic Preservation, and told the City Council on Monday that establishing an historic preservation commission wouldn’t necessarily hamstring property owners by imposing rules. She says there’s no regulatory oversight to the process.

The Caledonian-Record says executive director of the Newport City Renaissance Corporation Patricia Sears believes a preservation commission could be valuable for Newport’s downtown.
