NH considers ending liquor store monopoly

New Hampshire is considering a plan to allow grocery and convenience stores to sell rum, vodka and other liquor.

State Liquor Commission Chairman Mark Bodi confirmed this week a tentative plan to end the 75-year monopoly of selling liquor only in state-run liquor stores.

Sales at the 77 state-operated liquor stores approached $500 million last year. New Hampshire ranks seventh in gross sales among the 18 states with similar arrangements. But Bodi says there are signs that net income from the present structure has peaked.
