NH House kills bill doubling some speeding fines

The New Hampshire House has killed a bill that would have doubled some fines for speeding.

Lawmakers voted 157-137 Thursday against the increased fines. For example, speeding 1-10 mph above the limit – though rarely enforced – would have meant a $100 ticket plus a 20 percent penalty assessment on top of the fine. The fine currently is $50.

Supporters said the changes would have made the fines fairer, but critics said they were excessive.
