NH lawmaker wants fee for low-digit license plates

New Hampshire drivers with coveted low-digit license plates would pay the same $25 fee as vanity license plate holders under a proposal from an Ashland lawmaker.

Democrat Phil Preston says the quarter of a million dollars his plan would raise isn’t going to solve any big budget problems, but every little bit helps.

Plates with four or fewer digits used to go only to the well-connected. Under Safety Commissioner John Barthelmes, those who want the plates apply for them, and the numbers are awarded as they become available to those with records of community or other service.
