NH lawmakers may tweak civil unions

New Hampshire lawmakers are taking another look at a year-old law granting civil unions to same sex couples.

The House Commerce Committee will hear testimony Thursday on a bill to add civil union partners to all state insurance laws. Democratic state Representative Edward Butler is sponsoring the bill. He said lawmakers will likely move forward on related measures first.

Those include a bill to institute same sex marriage in New Hampshire, as well as a bill to grant civil unions to straight couples. Another proposal would recognize marriage in the Granite State as a union between one man and woman. Hearings on those measures are scheduled for February.

The state has issued more than 600 civil union licenses since January 2008.
