In spite of the winter storm, the New Hampshire Legislature is convening today.

Lawmakers open the legislative session to take care of mostly organizational issues. They will reconvene tomorrow for Governor John Lynch’s inauguration.

In a historic first, the Senate is the first state legislative body in the United States where women are in the majority. Thirteen of the 24 members are female. Democrats control the chamber 14 to 10.

Women were first elected to New Hampshire’s House in 1921 and to the Senate in 1930.

In another first, Democrats hold their first back-to-back majority in the House. The 400-member chamber is comprised of 224 Democrats and 176 Republicans.

Democrats also won control of both chambers in 2006.
