Fourteen sets of Claremont parents have been taken to court and could face fines up to $1,000 after their children missed too much school this year.

Claremont school officials said the children missed at least 20 days of school this year without excused absences.

Three families failed to appear at the arraignment. The other 11 pleaded not guilty and were scheduled to return to court for trial in June and July.

The truancy crackdown is part of a new program in Claremont schools called "Operation Back To School,” an effort to increase attendance and standardized test scores.

Some parents said their children’s attendance records are their own business, but school officials and police said attendance is required by law.
