Northern Power Systems of Barre and its parent company are seeking Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as a way to make it easier to find a buyer for the wind-power company.

The filing is not expected to disrupt operations at the company’s facility in the town of Barre. Northern Power Systems employees 81 people in Vermont.

The head the parent company, Distributed Energy,  says the company plans to use the Chapter 11 process to obtain time and legal protection to sell Northern Power and another company, Proton Energy.

Distributed Energy was created after the 2003 merger of Northern Power and Proton Energy, a hydrogen power company. Proton Energy did not file for bankruptcy.
