Funeral services are planned for this morning for retired newspaper journalist and open government advocate John Donahue Jr. of Northfield.

Donahue died from cancer at his home on Saturday. He was 88.

Donahue began his journalism career in Northfield in 1933 at age 12 when he and a cousin began The Falls News.

After World War II Donahue served as sports editor of the now defunct Burlington Daily News.

He worked for United Press in Europe and served for six years as national editor of the Washington Post.

Donahue got back into the newspaper business in Northfield in 1999. In July he sold the Northfield News and Transcript.

He is survived by his wife and six children.
