Norwich University investigates reported hazing of freshman military student

Northfield police say a Norwich University student is facing criminal charges that he hit a student under his command several times with a broomstick as part of what a hazing incident.

Police say 19-year-old Noel Fernando, of Northfield, also received a civil complaint of hazing.

The school says it’s investigating allegations that an upperclassman, who the school did not identify and who was part of a training cadre at the military school, assaulted an underclassman on campus on Thursday.

Police charge that Fernando hit the victim several times with a broom handle.

Norwich spokesman Mark Albury says the student is still on campus, but has been removed from his position with the training group and is not having any contact with the freshman.

Fernando could not be reached for comment.
