The federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission has dismissed calls by anti-nuclear groups for an overhaul of its review process before it finishes processing license renewal applications from Vermont Yankee and three other plants.

The New England Coalition and eight other groups critical of the nuclear industry had seized on a report last year by the NRC’s inspector general that found fault with the review process for license renewals.

The groups had asked that the NRC delay license renewals at Vermont Yankee, the Pilgrim Plant in Massachusetts, Oyster Creek plant in New Jersey and the Indian Point reactors in New York while its review process was investigated.

The NRC yesterday rejected that request, saying it is confident in its review system.
