Nuclear Watchdog Group: ‘We Told You So’ On Towers

A nuclear watchdog group is reacting to a suit by Vermont utilities over failures of the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant’s cooling towers by saying they warned of just such problems.

The New England Coalition’s comments followed the announcement this past week that Central Vermont Public Service and Green Mountain Power were suing Vermont Yankee and its owner, New Orleans-based Entergy Corp., over the cooling tower collapses in 2007 and 2008.

The utilities’ suit says they were forced to buy more expensive wholesale power when the tower failures forced Vermont Yankee to reduce its output.

The New England Coalition says its expert witnesses warned of potential problems with the cooling towers, especially if Vermont Yankee was permitted to boost its power output, which it was allowed to do.
