The emergence of the Internet and an energetic base of young people played a role. A sense of the underdog surging out of the background to grab the spotlight was also a factor. And Kate O’Connor was working behind the scenes to try and make Howard Dean’s long-shot presidential bid in 2004 a success.

O’Connor was as an aide on the campaign that captured the national imagination but ultimately fell short of its goal, and has written about the wild ride in a new book called "Do the Impossible: My Crash Course on Presidential Politics Inside the Howard Dean Campaign."

VPR’s Mitch Wertlieb spoke with Kate O’Connor.
