Cluster flies

Democrats’ ad says Republicans will steal votes
With less than three weeks to go before Election Day, Vermont Democrats have turned up the heat. The Democrats Thursday began airing advertisements that accuse Republicans of wanting to “steal” the election for governor and lieutenant governor. Republicans want the ad to be pulled. Voter fraud prevention
Secretary of State Deb Markowitz says a new election reform bill that has just been passed by Congress could bring as much as $20 million to the state over the next three years to help communities upgrade their local election systems. (Listen to the story online or read the transcript.) (VPR)

Unemployment rates
Unemployment is down in Vermont. The September figures released by the state Department of Employment and Training show the rate fell last month from 4.2% to 4%. But officials say the employment market is still soft. (AP)

Campbell named administration secretary
Vermont’s commissioner of finance and management will become the new administration secretary. Sean Campbell will join Governor Howard Dean’s administration for the last two months. Campbell will fill a post being vacated by Kathy Hoyt on November 1. The administration secretary is the top aide to the governor, responsible for the day-to-day operations of state government. (AP)

Burlington methadone clinic
Agents from the federal Drug Enforcement Administration will be in Burlington Friday to inspect the proposed site of Vermont’s first methadone clinic. The Legislature passed a law approving

Thunder Road development
The owners of the Thunder Road racetrack in Barre have won zoning approval for a housing project. The condominiums and single-family homes that would be developed by Ken Squier and Tom Curley are near the track. There is no plan to begin construction. (AP)

Sunderland shooting
Vermont state police are asking for the public’s help in solving a shooting yesterday in Sunderland. No one was injured in the incident, in which birdshot was used to shoot out the rear window of a van carrying a mother and child. (AP) such clinics more than a year ago. (AP)

Rochester police shooting
A Rochester man injured in a shootout with police remains in critical condition today at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire. Maurice Lizotte was wounded after he opened fire on police at his home. Two state troopers returned fire with at least 44 shots. The Vermont attorney general’s office is investigating the shooting.
