Vermont State Police say emergency workers who responded to a weekend house fire in Cabot later learned that the occupant had set the home ablaze before killing himself.

Firefighters arrived yesterday morning to find the home was fully engulfed in flames. State police said an investigation revealed that 65-year-old David Ross had set his home on fire using accelerants, then committed suicide with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police say his body was found about 50 feet from the house.

The Vermont State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations, the Vermont State Police Fire Unit, the Division of Fire Safety and an assistant medical examiner responded to the scene. The fire and death remain under investigation.
