The state of Vermont and the Merchants Bank are warning people about the resurgence of a scam that targets people through text messages and their mobile telephones.

The Vermont attorney general’s office, the Department of Financial Regulation and the Merchants Bank say calls and text messages direct consumers to call or text debit card or account numbers and information to "confirm" the account.

The calls are attempts to steal consumer account information by posing as the bank and scaring consumers into providing sensitive account information.

Consumers who have received the texts or calls should not give out their information and they should contact their bank immediately.
