On Town Meeting Day, Cities Elect Mayors, Towns Consider Budget

Vermonters are heading to their town halls and school gymnasiums for Town Meeting to vote on town and school budgets, elect officials and decide if money should be spent to support the local library or to build a new roof on the town hall.

In the city of Rutland, Mayor Christopher Louras is facing a challenge from City Alderman David Allaire. For Vergennes mayor, Alderman William Benton is running against former Mayor April Jin.

About 24 communities are expected to take up nonbinding resolutions opposing any possible plan to transport tar sands oil through Vermont.

Portland Pipe Line Corp has said that the company is willing to move tar sands oil from Canada across northern New England but has no plans to do so.

Environmentalists are concerned about potential spills.
