An opponent of same-sex marriage told a panel yesterday that allowing it would effectively destroy the institution of marriage.

Monte Stewart, president of the Marriage Law Foundation, a public interest law firm in Orem, Utah that opposes gay marriage, got a cool reception at a meeting of the Vermont Commission on Family Recognition and Protection.

He was one of four attorneys to give presentations to the 11-member panel, which was appointed to weigh the pros and cons of expanding Vermont’s first-in-the-nation civil unions law to allow gay and lesbian couples to marry.

While their presentations focused on the legal aspects of the debate, two lawyers said they favored legalizing gay marriage, while one was against it and a fourth didn’t express an opinion.
