New England Newspapers Inc., which runs newspapers in Bennington and Brattleboro, says it will require about 300 hourly and salaries employees to take unpaid one-week furloughs in a cost-cutting measure.

The employees work at the Brattleboro Reformer and Bennington Banner in Vermont and the North Adams Transcript, The Berkshire Eagle and The Advocate in Massachusetts.

New England Newspapers President Andrew H. Mick says the furloughs, which must be taken by the end of March, will affect everyone from the chief executive to the guy who takes out the trash.

The furloughs affect all employees of the newspaper group’s parent company, MediaNews Group of Denver.
