The parents of a 10-year-old boy in North Bennington say he was “silenced” by his teacher for talking about hunting in the classroom, and they’re not happy about it.

Wendy Bordwell and Martin Harrington took their son, Jared Harrington, out of North Bennington Graded School in protest and are asking the local school board to take action.

The couple aired the grievance with school officials at a meeting Monday night.

Bordwell says that during snack time in her son’s class, Jared was talking about the spring turkey hunting season with a classmate when teacher Kathleen Backus interrupted the conversation and said there should be no talk of “killing” in the classroom.

School Principal Thomas Martin says he hopes school officials can settle the matter. He says he won’t support anything that inhibits conversation about any student’s hobby as long as it’s in good taste.
