Vermont Agency of Transportation officials say a southbound section of Interstate 89 in Sharon closed after a piece of granite fell off a truck will remain closed through about Oct. 24, and maybe longer.

Repairs to the southbound lanes of the highway at Exit 2 will take longer than the two days originally anticipated. In the meantime, traffic is being directed off the interstate, across Route 132 and back into the highway.

The northbound highway isn’t affected.

The granite slab, weighing an estimated 20 tons, fell off a flatbed truck and damaged the road surface and railing Wednesday.
