New York Governor David Paterson isn’t close to naming a successor to Hillary Rodham Clinton’s senate seat, but he does have a list of who will help him decide.

Paterson tells The Associated Press there more than a half-dozen influential New Yorkers who he said will play roles in helping him choose the state’s next U.S. senator.

The first two he named are obvious: Senator Charles Schumer, who will serve with Paterson’s pick, and Congressman Charlie Rangel, a longtime political friend and the dean of New York’s congressional delegation.

The other advisers are Reps. Greg Meeks and Nita Lowey, as well as Paterson advisers William Cunningham and Charlotte Hitchcock. And, the governor was quick to add, his wife.
