Vermont State Police say a pilot from Batavia, New York, was killed instantly when his plane crashed in Pownal last week.

The twin-engine cargo plane crashed into a wooded hillside Friday after attempting to land at the state airport in Bennington.

The medical examiner completed an autopsy on the body of pilot William Smith yesterday.

State police say the autopsy concluded Smith was killed instantly in the crash.

An investigation into the crash is continuing by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.

The plane was owned by freight cargo company Air Now. It was headed to Bennington for maintenance.
