Plaintiff in priest sex suit seeks lien on Diocese building

A former altar boy who won an $8.7 million jury verdict against the Diocese of Burlington this week wants a court to put a lien on the diocese’s office building to make sure the settlement gets paid.

A lawyer who helped the 40-year-old Colorado man win the award in a priest sex case has filed papers seeking a writ of attachment on the diocese’s headquarters in Burlington, a brick building overlooking Lake Champlain worth more than $11 million.

If he gets the lien, the man wouldn’t get the property. Instead, he has a legal claim on it in case the diocese can’t come up with the money for the settlement.
