Police ask motorists to give emergency vehicles space

The Vermont State Police are warning motorists they need to change lanes when approaching an emergency vehicle stopped on the side of the interstate.

Police say they plan to begin enforcing a state law that requires motorists to change lanes if conditions allow when they approach a police car, fire truck or ambulance with its blue or red emergency lights lit. The law is a result of officers being hit by cars that didn’t change lanes.

The warning comes on one of the first day this season when rain and snow created slippery driving conditions across parts of the state.
