Some Dartmouth College students could help solve a 40-year-old mystery about what happened to a World War I cannon missing from the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington.

Police say a man on his deathbed confessed to taking it. He says it’s buried under the Dartmouth College football field.

Police found an ammunition carriage beneath the bleachers at the stadium. They believe the cannon may be buried nearby.

The Dartmouth geophysics class will scan the area and to try to locate the cannon.

Police say they don’t know who the man was who confessed to taking the cannon.

Veterans Home administrator Colleen Rundell says she doesn’t want to prosecute anyone. She just wants the cannon back.
