Police and fire chiefs in the Vermont city of Rutland are challenging their departments and emergency and public safety personnel to give blood.

Rutland Police Chief James Baker and Fire Chief Robert Schlachter are encouraging their colleagues in Rutland County to sign up for the Dec. 18 Gift-of-Life-Marathon.

Baker says police deal with life’s emergencies every day and understand the importance of a safe and stable blood supply.

The blood drive is trying to break the one-day national blood drive record of 1,968 pints.

Donors are encouraged to make an appointment by calling 800-RED-CROSS or visiting the event’s web site www.giftoflifemarathon.com.
