The head of the Vermont State Police says the two troopers who shot and killed a man who pointed a gun at them was doing what they were trained to do.

The victim has been identified as 41-year-old Darren Tufts.

The shooting occurred Tuesday night after police were called to an apartment building for a report of shots fired. It was the third noise complaint of the night about the building.

Colonel James Baker says that when the two troopers arrived they found Tufts at the back of the apartment building holding an assault rifle. He says Tufts then raised the gun and pointing it at them.

The troopers shot Tufts multiple times.

They then noticed that the apartment was on fire, and removed Tufts’ body before calling the fire department.

Baker says there’s no indication that Sergeant Manley and Trooper O’Donnell acted outside the scope of their authority.
