(Host) The summer travel season began today with the arrival of Memorial Day weekend.

And Vermont State Police say they will be out in force throughout the weekend to help make sure the highways are safe.

State police call their stepped-up patrols “Operation CARE” – or Combined Accident Reduction Effort.”

State police say every available member of the state police, from commanders through detectives and support staff, will be in uniform.

They’ll be on patrol and doing safety and sobriety checkpoints at locations around the state.

State police officials say they have a simple goal. For each of the past three years, there has been one traffic fatality on Vermont roads over the Memorial Day weekend. They say they’d like to reduce that to zero this year.
