A new poll shows that Republican Gov. Jim Douglas is maintaining a significant lead over his two major opponents.

The poll by WCAX television found that Douglas was supported by 47 percent of those polled, Democrat Gaye Symington was supported by 24 percent while independent candidate Anthony Pollina had 23 percent.

Over the last month, Douglas’s support dropped 1 percent, Symington lost 9 percent while Pollina gained 16 percent.

The poll of 400 likely Vermont voters was conducted Oct. 24 through Oct. 26 by Research 2000, of Rockville, Md. The margin for error was plus or minus 5 percentage points.

If the leading candidate fails to win a majority of the votes cast, the race will be decided in January by the Legislature.
