Pollina calls on Douglas to reverse Health Department on Yankee radiation measures

Independent gubernatorial candidate Anthony Pollina is criticizing the Douglas administration for allowing more radioactivity to escape from the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant.

A state report issued last week said radiation from the plant had increased by about 30 percent since it was allowed to increase its power output 20 percent two years ago.

The radiation was deemed still be to be below the state’s safety limit – after the way the Health Department measured the dose at the plant’s fence line was reconfigured.

Pollina says that may be bad for public health. But Douglas says he’s comfortable with what the Health Department did, saying Vermont’s radiation limits are still well below that the federal government allows.
