A state air pollution control official took the stand today to defend Vermont’s adoption of rules cracking down on auto emissions.

Tom Moye, of the state Air Pollution Control Division, says 45% of greenhouse gas emissions in Vermont come from cars and trucks and that the state adopted the rules in hopes of reducing global warming.

Vermont’s new rules require a 30% cut in carbon emissions in the next nine years.

Moye says the state believes auto makers have the technology to comply with the law.

Automakers are suing to overturn the new rules. The industry says the new rules are too strict and can’t be met without major job losses, increases in the retail price of cars and curtailed availability of certain models.
