A Swanton man has been sentenced to 30 years to life in prison after being convicted of trying to abduct a woman from a Burlington street in 2009.

Forty-five-year-old Harold Porter was convicted in March – in a second trial – of trying to kidnap the 25-year-old from Colchester Avenue. The first trial ended with a hung jury.

Prosecutors say Porter assaulted the woman and tried to push her into his truck. The woman was able to escape and call police.

The Burlington Free Press reports that authorities used surveillance tape from a bus that had been on Colchester Avenue and statements from a car salesman who identified the truck Porter was driving.

Porter was previously convicted in 2001 of prohibited acts in Franklin County and of unlawful restraint.
