Pownal site could contain hazardous waste

Already having completed a 60-million-dollar cleanup of hazardous wastes at the site of a former tannery, the town of Pownal appears to be facing a similar problem at another property nearby.

Property owned by Robert Barlow of Stamford near the site of the former Pownal Tanning Co. is being studied to determine the extent of contamination and who the responsible parties are.

Brian Woods, an environmental analyst with the state Department of Environmental Conservation, says his agency issued a grant for preliminary study of the property earlier this month.

Woods says the Barlow property was once used as a town dump, meaning the town could be responsible to pay for at least some of the cleanup.
