Preliminary Results: Abbott Wins Recount

Washington County Superior Court Judge Robert Bent says a recount has affirmed the original results of the Progressive Party gubernatorial primary.

Bent said in court today that preliminary results of the recount show that Party Chairwoman Martha Abbott received 381 votes, while her write-in challenger, Annette Smith, received 340.

On Tuesday, the court will hear arguments regarding roughly six disputed ballots — but those shouldn’t change the outcome of the race.

"Based on the numbers we have, unless there’s something else, it doesn’t appear that (that) will be sufficient to shift the outcome," Bent said. "But nonetheless that’s what tomorrow’s process looks like – any other objections I can take up."

Smith asked for the recount after the initial count showed that Abbot appeared to win by one vote.
