Secretary of State Deb Markowitz says the low voter turnout in Tuesday’s primary election could be a record.

While final numbers aren’t in yet, Markowitz says the turnout could be less than 10 percent.

Over the last six primary elections, turnout averaged about 19 percent.

She says the main reason for the low turnout could be the lack of a major contested statewide race. The weather could also have kept some people home.

Markowitz says that in some towns only a handful of voters went to the polls.
