Residents of about 40 households in Chelsea are back home after a propane truck crash prompted their evacuation.

Officials say the Leonard’s Gas & Electric propane truck slid off an icy into an embankment on Tuesday.

As a tow crew was recovering the truck on Tuesday night, a pipe fractured, causing a propane leak, prompting the evacuations.

Propane, a liquid fuel, turns gaseous when it hits the air. Officials estimate about 800 gallons were released.

Residents were allowed to return home Wednesday afternoon.
