Protesters call for Vermont Yankee inspections

About 30 anti-nuclear protesters converged in downtown Montpelier today to urge the Public Service Board to reject a proposed power increase at the Vermont Yankee plant. The group included members of Nuclear Free Vermont and other anti-nuclear organizations.

It called on the board to request that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission order an independent safety analysis of the Vernon reactor. They say such a top-to-bottom review of the Maine Yankee plant several years ago prompted that reactor to shut down.

The board is expected to rule next week on Vermont Yankee’s request for a 20 percent power increase. Board Chairman Michael Dworkin told the group their concerns would be given serious consideration.
