Public defender in high profile cases laid off, budget cited

The public defender in some Vermont’s most high profile criminal cases is out of a job.

Officials say Lorin Duckman was laid off because of budget considerations.

Public Defender Matthew Valerio says Duckman’s cases will be covered by other attorneys.

Valerio says other vacant positions have gone unfilled and the office has been searching for other savings.

Duckman had been handling a sex assault case against Brian Rooney, the Richmond man facing separate charges that he killed University of Vermont student Michelle Gardner-Quinn.

Duckman also represented Christopher Williams, the man accused of killing two people and wounding two others last year in Essex.
