As a result of work at the governors and premiers meeting in Quebec City, the water in Lake Champlain’s Missisquoi Bay should be getting cleaner. The state of Vermont and province of Quebec have agreed on a plan to reduce phosphates in the bay that straddles the U.S.-Canadian border. Governor Dean says Vermont will be responsible for 60% of the cleanup while Quebec will be responsible for 40%.
In Vermont, most of the phosphates come from runoff from large farms. Dean says that a large part of Quebec’s problem is a lack of sufficient wastewater treatment.
